Access to SAS at Cornell

The SAS System is one of the most frequently used statistical software programs at Cornell and nationwide. SAS can perform a wide variety of analyses, and is the standard statistical software for many fields. If you need to use SAS in your research, the following information may help you get started.
If you would like to use SAS on your own computer, SAS version 6.11 for Windows 3.xx, Windows95, or the Power Macintosh can be obtained through the Cornell site-license administered by the Cornell Institute for Social and Economic Research (CISER). The initial cost is $145 per year per machine. Annual renewal, January through December, is $110. CISER has been successful in having researchers install SAS themselves, using instructions and materials provided by SAS. The contact person is Mariann Carpenter, mgc1@cornell.edu. To order SAS, complete the order form on the CISER web page, http://www.ciser.cornell.edu. Mariann will then contact you to arrange a mutually convenient time to pick up the installation materials, and give instructions on their use.
SAS 6.11 for Windows typically requires 60 megabytes of hard disk space, 12 megabytes of memory, and Windows 3.1 or above. If your own computer does not meet these requirements, or if you only want to run a few programs, you can use SAS 6.11 for Windows in the Stone Microcomputer Facility in Mann Library. Some departments provide SAS for Windows in departmental computer facilities.
SAS is also available on the UNIX platform through CISER and Cornell Information Technologies (CIT). Social science faculty and their graduate students may obtain CISER accounts which provide access to SAS 6.11 on the UNIX operating system, as well as a variety of other software and services. The CISER web page contains more information and an on-line application for a CISER account. If your department does not provide SAS access or CISER membership, you may request an account on CIT's Research computer. Contact the CIT Help Desk at 255-8990 for more information.
If you will be using SAS in the UNIX environment, consider attending one of the CISER computing group's sets of hands-on workshops in September in the Stone Microcomputer Center, Mann Library. The topics addressed in the three-day series of workshops are "How to Use the vi Editor", "Introduction to UNIX", and "How to Use SAS on CISER Servers". CISER members and their graduate students can register for these workshops by submitting the on-line registration form on the CISER web page. Registration is required because the workshops are hands-on, and a machine needs to be reserved. Non-CISER members may attend if space permits.
